Natalee Thai – Beverly Hills

Natalee Thai, in Beverly Hills and Culver City, sets itself apart from other Thai restaurants by their stylish decor. Instead of traditional Thai artwork and statues, you’ll get a contemporary setting in which to dine, accompanied by modern Western music.

Part of the fun of coming to Natalee Thai is their whimsically named dishes on their menu like Hi Yo Silver!, Peanut Pleasure and Disco Shrimp – though they’ve seemed to cut back on the silly names in recent years.

Taking a rare departure from ordering the classic Pad Thai, we tried their Siamese Shrimp, with onions and bell peppers, sautéed in a red chili paste. It was more interesting than the typical stir-fried shrimp, a little spicy, and had me reaching for my water glass.

Our other spicy dish, the Ping Fish & Chili, was my favorite of the day. Deep-fried battered sole in a red curry sauce and tossed with bell peppers, the dish was flavorful and, yes, a little spicy.

Not the fortune I wanted to see at the end of my meal.

Is it the best Thai restaurant in town? No, as it tends to be a little sweeter and lacks some of the complexities found at more authentic Thai restaurants. Natalee Thai, however, turns out decent renditions of curries and pad thai, which I relied on for dinner for several years.  For something a little more interesting, try one of the spicy dishes, marked with an asterisk. Hopefully, the fortune you see at the end of your meal will be more optimistic fortune than this one.
